凡執贄,天子用暢,公侯用玉,卿用羔,大夫用雁。雁乃有類於長者,長者在民上,必施然有先後之隨,必然有行列之治,故大夫以為贄。羔有角而不任,設備而不用,類好仁者;執之不鳴,殺之不諦,類死義者;羔食於其母,必跪而受之,類知禮者;故羊之為言猶祥與!故卿以為贄。玉有似君子。子曰:「人而不曰如之何、如之何者,吾末如之何也矣。」故匿病者不得良醫,羞問者聖人去之,以為遠功而近有災,是則不有。玉至清而不蔽其惡,內有瑕積,必見之於外,故君子不隱其短。不知則問,不能則學,取之玉也。君子比之玉,玉潤而不污,是仁而至清潔也;廉而不殺,是義而不害也;堅而不堅,過而不濡。視之如庸,展之如石,狀如石,搔而不可從繞,潔白如素,而不受污,玉類備者,故公侯以為贄。暢有似於聖人者,純仁淳粹,而有知之貴也,擇於身者盡為德音,發於事者盡為潤澤。積美陽芬香,以通之天。合之為一,而達其臭,氣暢於天。其淳粹無擇,與聖人一也,故天子以為贄。而各以事上也。觀贄之意,可以見其事。
