Qing Ke of Qi had an affair with Sheng Mengzi, and together with a woman dressed in veils, they rode in a palanquin into Hong. Bao Qian saw them and reported to Guo Wuzi. Guo Wuzi summoned Qing Ke and addressed him. Qing Ke did not leave for a long time, and told his wife: "The Guo family has censured me." His wife became angry. Guozi served as the assistant to Duke Ling and convened Gao and Bao to take up their posts in defense. When they were about to return, just before arriving, the gates were shut and guests were searched for. Sheng Mengzi complained, saying: "Gao and Bao are going to refuse to admit the lord and instead install Gongzi Jiao. "Guozi knows about it." In autumn, in the seventh month, on the Rinyin day, Bao Qian was amputated and Gao Wujiu was driven out. Gao Wujiu fled to Ju, and Gao Ruo rebelled with Lu. The people of Qi came to summon Bao Guo and installed him in power. Originally, Bao Guo had left the Bao clan and come to serve as a retainer of Shixiaoshu. The Shi family divined for an official in charge of sacrifices, and Kuanggou Xu was considered auspicious. The administrator of the Shi family held a fief with one hundred households. They granted Kuanggou Xu a fief and appointed him as administrator. He yielded to Bao Guo, thus transferring the fief to him. Shi Xiaoshu said: "You are indeed auspicious." He replied: "Being able to associate with loyal and virtuous people—what greater auspiciousness could there be?" Bao Guo served the Shi family faithfully, so the people of Qi took him as a successor to the Bao clan. Zhong Ni said: "The wisdom of Bao Zhuangzi was not as good as that of the kui plant, for even a kui can still protect its roots."

Originally, Shengbo dreamed of crossing the Huan River, when someone gave him a qionggui and fed it to him. He wept until he turned into a qionggui, filling his bosom. He followed this with a song: "The waters of the Huan River saved me; they gave me qionggui as a gift. Return, return! Will my bosom be filled with qionggui?" He was afraid and dared not interpret the dream. After returning from Zheng, on the Renshen day he arrived at Lishen and interpreted it, saying: "I feared death, so I dared not interpret it. Now the group is numerous and has followed me for three years; there will be no harm. When I spoke of it, he went to Mo and died.

Duke of Qi appointed Cui Zhu as a high official and assigned Qing Ke to assist him, leading troops to besiege Lu. The Duke of Qi made an alliance with him at Xuguan and restored his position. In the twelfth month, Lu surrendered. He sent Guo Sheng to report the crisis to Jin and wait for orders at Qing.
Jin Liangong was extravagant and had many favored concubines from outside. After returning from Yanning, he wanted to remove all the high officials and appoint his own favorites instead. Xu Tong, because of Xu Ke's dismissal, resented the Xi clan and was favored by King Liangong. Xi Qi seized five fields from Yiyang Wu; Wu also enjoyed favor with King Liangong. Xi Chou and Changyu Jiao quarreled over farmland; he was arrested and shackled, together with his parents, wife, and children in the same cart. Later, Jiao also gained favor with King Liangong. Luanshu resented Xi Zhi, because he had not followed his orders and thus caused the defeat of the Chu forces. He wanted to depose him and sent Prince Fei of Chu to inform the king: "In this battle, it was actually Xi Zhi who summoned me, saying that since the eastern troops had not yet arrived and the military commanders were incomplete, 'This will surely lead to failure; therefore, I have supported Sun Zhou to serve you.'" The king informed Luanshu, who said: "If there is any truth to this or not, would he truly be so indifferent to his own death as to accept an envoy from the enemy? Why does Your Majesty not try sending him to Zhou and observe what happens?" Xi Zhi was sent on a diplomatic mission to Zhou, and Luanshu had Sun Zhou meet with him. The king sent someone to spy on them, and the report confirmed it as true. Thus he became resentful toward Xi Zhi. King Liangong, while hunting, drank alcohol with concubines before ordering the high officials to be killed. Xi Zhi was carrying a pig for sacrifice when it was seized by Shiren Meng Zhang, and Xi Zhi shot and killed him. The king said: "Jizi has deceived me." King Liangong was about to launch a coup. Xu Tong said: "We must eliminate the three Xi brothers first, for their clan is large and they have many grievances." "Eliminating a powerful family will not be burdensome; having many enemies and grievances can be advantageous." The king said, "Indeed." The Xi clan heard about it. Xi Qi wanted to attack the king and said: "Even if we die, the lord will surely be in danger." Xi Zhi said: "What enables a person to stand upright is trustworthiness, wisdom, and courage. "Trustworthiness means not betraying the lord; wisdom means not harming the people; courage means not inciting rebellion. If we lose these three virtues, who will support us in death and bear grievances? What use are they to the lord if he has loyal ministers yet kills them? What would others say of our lord? If I am truly guilty, then let me die." "If we kill the innocent, we will lose our people. Can peace be achieved? We shall merely await orders." "We have received the lord's salary, and thus gathered followers." "To gather a faction and defy orders—what greater crime could there be?" On the Renwu day, Xu Tong and Yiyang Wu led eight hundred armored men to attack the Xi clan. Changyu Jiao requested not to use a large force, so the king sent Qing Feitui to assist them. They drew out spears and tied their sashes together while pretending to be disputing litigants. The three Xi brothers were about to plot at Xie. Jiao killed Ju Bo and Kucheng Shu with a spear right where they sat. Wen Ji said: "This is fleeing from authority." So he hurried away, but Jiao caught up with him by his chariot and killed him with a spear. Their corpses were displayed in the court. Xu Tong led his armed men to seize Luanshu and Zhonghang Yan at court. Jiao said: "If we do not kill these two men, the trouble will surely reach you, Your Majesty!" The king said: "To have three high officials executed in a single day is too much; I cannot bear to add more." He replied: "People will grow tolerant of you. I have heard that disorder outside the court is called 'jian,' but within the court, it is called 'gui.' Control jian with virtue; control gui with punishment. To kill without first applying measures is not virtue; to leave a powerful minister unchecked and unchallenged cannot be called punishment. If virtue and punishment are not established, both jian and gui will arrive together. I request permission to go." So he left and fled to Di. The king sent a message to the two men, saying: "I had an order against the Xi clan; they have already suffered their due punishment. Gentlemen, do not consider this as an insult—please return to your posts!" They both kowtowed twice and said: "Your Majesty has punished the guilty, yet spared our lives—this is your grace. Even if we two ministers were to die, how could we ever forget Your Majesty's virtue?" Thus they both returned. The king appointed Xu Tong as a high official. The king was touring at Jianglishi, when Luanshu and Zhonghangyan suddenly seized him. They summoned Shigai, who declined. They summoned Han Jue, who also refused, saying: "In the past, I was raised by the Zhao clan; despite Lady Mengji's slander, I could still defy military orders." "An old saying goes: 'To kill an old ox, no one dares to take responsibility.'" How much less so for a lord?" "You two or three men are unable to serve your lord; then what need is there for Jue?"
舒庸人以楚师之败也,道吴人围巢,伐驾,围厘虺,遂恃吴而不设备。楚公子橐师袭舒庸,灭之。
Taking advantage of the defeat of the Chu forces, the Shuyong people guided Wu troops to besiege Chao, attacked Jia, and surrounded Li Hui. Thus relying on Wu, they failed to prepare for defense. The Marquis Tuoshi of the Chu clan launched a surprise attack on Shuyong and annihilated it.
闰月,乙卯,晦,栾书、中行偃杀胥童。民不与郤氏,胥童道君为乱,故皆书曰「晋杀其大夫」。
On the Yimao day, the last day of the intercalary month, Luanshu and Zhonghang Yan killed Xu Tong. The people did not support the Xi clan; Xu Tong led the king into rebellion, so they are all recorded as "the Jin state killed its official."
