| | In summer, Duke Xiaogong of Qi attacked our northern borderlands. The Wei people attacked Qi, due to the Taiao Alliance. The Gong sent Zhan Xi to offer rewards to the troops and had him receive instructions from Zhan Qin. Before Duke Qi had entered the border, Zhan Xi followed him and said: "My lord has heard that Your Majesty is about to set foot in our humble territory, so he sent me, your lowly minister, to offer rewards to those in charge." Duke Qi said: "Are the Lu people afraid?" He replied: "The common people are afraid, but the gentlemen are not." Duke Qi said: "Your houses are as empty as hanging kongzhongs, and the fields have no green grass; on what do you rely to not be afraid?" He replied: "We rely on the command of our ancestors. In the past, Duke Zhou and Tai Gong were pillars of the Zhou dynasty, assisting King Cheng in governance." King Cheng honored them with rewards and granted them an alliance, saying: "May your descendants through the ages never harm each other!" It is recorded in the archives of alliances, and it is the duty of the Grand Master. Duke Huan was therefore able to convene the feudal lords and address their disagreements, mending their shortcomings and rescuing them from disasters; this was a demonstration of his old duties. When Your Majesty ascended the throne, the feudal lords looked forward to saying: "May you follow Duke Huan's achievements." Our humble territory therefore dares not to gather and protect, saying: "Could their descendants have abandoned the mandate and neglected their duties after nine generations? How could they treat our ancestors? Your Majesty must not do so." We rely on this to remain unafraid." Duke Qi then withdrew.
