凡聽:威嚴猛厲,而不好假道人,則下畏恐而不親,周閉而不竭。若是,則大事殆乎弛,小事殆乎遂。和解調通,好假道人,而無所凝止之,則姦言並至,嘗試之說起。若是,則聽大事煩,是又傷之也。故法而不議,則法之所不至者必廢。職而不通,則職之所不及者必隊。故法而議,職而通,無隱謀,無遺善,而百事無過,非君子莫能。故公平者,聽1之衡也;中和者,聽之繩也。其有法者以法行,無法者以類舉,聽之盡也。偏黨而不經,聽之辟也。故有良法而亂者,有之矣,有君子而亂者,自古及今,未嘗聞也。傳曰:「治生乎君子,亂生乎小人。」此之謂也。

孫卿子曰:不然。臣之所道,仁者之兵,王者之志也。君之所貴,權謀埶利也;所行,攻奪變詐也;諸侯之事也。仁人之兵,不可詐也;彼可詐者,怠慢者也,路亶者也,君臣上下之間,渙然有離德者也。故以桀詐桀,猶巧拙有幸焉。以桀詐堯,譬之:若以卵投石,以指撓沸;若赴水火,入焉焦沒耳。故仁人上下,百將一心,三軍同力;臣之於君也,下之於上也,若子之事父,弟之事兄,若手臂之扞頭目而覆胸腹也,詐而襲之,與先驚而後擊之,一也。且仁人之用十里之國,則將有百里之聽;用百里之國,則將有千里之聽;用千里之國,則將有四海之聽,必將聰明警戒和傳而一。故仁人之兵,聚則成卒,散則成列,延則若莫邪之長刃,嬰之者斷;兌則若莫邪之利,當之者潰,圜居而方止,則若盤石然,觸之者角摧,案角鹿埵隴種東籠而退耳。且夫暴國之君,將誰與至哉?彼其所與至者,必其民也,而其民之親我歡若父母,其好我芬若椒蘭,彼反顧其上,則若灼黥,若讎仇;人之情,雖桀跖,豈又肯為其所惡,賊其所好者哉!是猶使人之子孫自賊其父母也,彼必將來告之,夫又何可詐也!故仁人用國日明,諸侯先順者安,後順者危,慮敵之者削,反之者亡。《》曰:「武王載發,有虔秉鉞;如火烈烈,則莫我敢遏。」此之謂也。

孫卿與臨武君議兵於趙孝成王之前。王曰:「敢問兵之要?」臨武君曰:「夫兵之要,上得天時,下得地利,後之發,先之至,此兵之要也。」孫卿曰:「不然。夫兵之要,在附親士民而已。六馬不和,造父不能以致遠;弓矢不調,羿不能以中微;士民不親附,湯武不能以戰勝。由此觀之,要在於附親士民而已矣。」臨武君曰:「不然。夫兵之用,變故也,其所貴,謀詐也,善用之者,猶脫兔莫知其出;孫吳用之,無敵於天下。由此觀之,豈待親士民而後可哉!」孫卿曰:「不然。君之所道者、諸侯之兵、謀臣之事也;臣之所道者、仁人之兵,聖王之事也。彼可詐者,必怠慢者也,君臣上下之際,突然有離德者也。夫以跖而詐桀,猶有工拙焉。以桀詐堯,如以指撓沸,以卵投石,抱羽毛而赴烈火,入則燋也,夫何可詐也!且夫暴國將孰與至哉?彼其與至者,必欺其民,民之親我也,芬若椒蘭,歡如父子,彼顧其上,如憯毒蜂蠆之人,雖桀跖豈肯為其所至惡,賊其所至愛哉!是猶使人之子孫,自賊其父母也,彼則先覺其失,何可詐哉!且仁人之兵,聚則成卒,散則成列,延居則若莫邪之長刃,嬰之者斷,銳居則若莫邪之利,當之者潰,圓居則若丘山之不可移也,方居則若磐石之不可拔也,觸之,摧角折節而退爾,夫何可詐也。《》曰:『武王載旆,有虔秉鉞;如火烈烈,則莫我敢曷。』此謂湯武之兵也。」孝成王避席仰首曰:「寡人雖不敏,請依先生之兵也。」

漢十一年,九江黥布反,高皇帝疾,欲使太子往擊之,是時園公、綺里季、夏公黃、角里先生,已侍太子,聞太子將擊黥布,四人相謂曰:「凡來者將以存太子,太子將兵事,危矣。」乃說建成侯曰:「太子將兵,有功,則位不益;無功,從此受禍矣。且太子所與俱諸將,皆嘗與上定天下梟將也,乃使太子將之,此無異使羊將狼也,皆不肯為用盡力,其無功必矣。臣聞母愛者子抱,今戚夫人日夜侍御,趙王常居抱前,上終不使不肖子居愛子上。明乎其代太子位必矣。君何不急謂呂后承間為上泣,言黥布天下猛將,善用兵,諸將皆陛下故等倫,乃令太子將此屬,無異使羊將狼,莫為用。且使布聞之,即鼓行而西耳。上雖疾,臥護之,諸將不敢不盡力,雖苦,強為妻子計。載輜車,臥而行。」於是呂澤立夜見呂后,呂后承間為上泣而言,如四人意。上曰:「吾惟豎子,故不足遣,乃公自行耳。」於是上自將東,群臣居守,皆送至霸上。留侯疾,強起至曲郵見上曰:「臣宜從,疾甚,楚人剽疾,願上無與楚人爭。」因說上曰:「令太子為將軍,監關中諸侯兵。」上謂子房雖疾,強起臥而傅太子,是時叔孫通已為太子太傅,留侯行少傅事。漢遂誅黥布,太子安寧,國家晏然,此四公子之謀也。

或問:「李斯盡忠,胡亥極刑,忠乎?」曰:「斯以留客,至作相,用狂人之言,從浮大海,立趙高之邪說,廢沙丘之正,阿意督責,焉用忠?」「霍?」曰:「始元之初,擁少帝之微,摧燕、上官之,處廢興之分,堂堂乎忠,難矣哉!至顯,不終矣。」
Zhong and Li:
Someone said: Li Si was completely loyal to the Qin, but in the end Emperor Huhai executed him. What's the point of loyalty?
Yangzi said: Li Si stayed in Qin as a guest of Lu Buwei and eventually became Prime Minister. Using the words of an alchemist to flatter the Emperor, he followed Qin Shi Huang on his tours of the four seas. 聖深知之,皆務正己以為表,明禮義以為教,和德氣於未生之前,正表義於咳笑之後。民之胎也,合中和以成;其生也,立方正以長。是以為仁義之心、廉恥之志,骨著脈通,與體俱生,而無麤穢之氣,無邪淫之欲。雖放之大荒之外,措之幽冥之內,終無違禮之之行;投之危亡之地,納之鍔之間,終無苟全之心。舉世之人,行皆若此,則又烏所得亡夫姦亂之民而加辟哉?「上天之載,無馨無臭,儀形文王,萬邦作孚。」此姬氏所以崇美於前,而致刑錯於後。
