'Du Yang Za Bian' (《杜陽雜編》), a three-volume work, was compiled by Su E during the Tang Dynasty. Su E also authored another work titled 'Yan Yi' (《演義》). 'Du Yang Za Bian' covers a span of ten reigns, starting from the Daizong period of Guangde in the first year to the Yizong period of Xiantong in the fourteenth year. Each section is titled with three characters.

The work is known for its descriptions of extraordinary skills and precious items, often bordering on the fantastical. It largely follows the style of Wang Jia's 'Shi Yi' (《拾遺》) and Guo Ziheng's 'Dong Ming' (《洞冥》). Although Su E attempts to substantiate his accounts by citing witnesses, the narratives often resemble popular legends rather than historical facts. For instance, the book mentions various countries and regions such as Rilin, Dalin, Wenden, Wuming, Jumi, Dazhen, Nanchang, Zhe Dong, Tiaozhi, Guigu, Helling, and Duli, which are not recorded in the 'Tang Shu' (《唐書》) 'Wai Guo Zhuan' (《外國傳》) or the imperial biographies of various emperors. Additionally, it claims that the state of Fuyu, which had long been annexed by the Bohai Dynasty, sent tribute in the Wuzong period of Hui Chang in the first year, and it incorrectly places Jibin, a region near the Pamir Mountains, in the Western Sea.

Despite these inaccuracies, 'Du Yang Za Bian' is celebrated for its elaborate and ornate prose, making it a valuable source of material for literary compositions. Its vivid and colorful descriptions have captivated readers, leading them to overlook the embellishments and exaggerations. The work's enduring appeal is evident in its continued use and reference.

The title 'Du Yang Za Bian' is derived from the location where Su E resided. According to Chao Gongwu in his 'Dushu Zhi' (《讀書志》), Su E lived in Duyang, a place in Wu Gong, and named his work after this location.

《杜陽雜編》

《杜陽雜編》，唐蘇鶚著，共三卷。蘇鶚另著有《演義》，其作品已被著錄。《杜陽雜編》記載的時間範圍上起唐代宗廣德元年（763年），下至唐懿宗咸通十四年（873年），共涵蓋十個朝代的歷史，每篇皆以三個字為標題。

然而，《杜陽雜編》文筆華麗，詞藻豐富，常被後世詞賦家引用，成為小說家以文採見長的作品。讀者往往被其華美的文辭所吸引，而忽略了其中的誇張和虛構，至今仍被廣泛引用。書名《杜陽雜編》的由來，據晁公武《讀書志》記載，因蘇鶚居於武功之杜陽，故以其地名命名此書。
