Wen Chang Za Lu[View] [Edit] [History]ctext:183258
The 'Wenchang Zalu' ('文昌雜錄') is a seven-volume historical text compiled by Pang Yuanying (庞元英) during the Song dynasty. Pang, whose courtesy name was Maoxian (懋賢) and who hailed from Dan Zhou, served as a 'Chao San Da Fu' (朝散大夫) and held the post of guest affairs officer ('zhuke langzhong') in the Ministry of Rites. The work documents administrative practices, court ceremonies, and anecdotal accounts from his tenure during the Yuanfeng era (renxu, 1082), a period marked by early reforms in the Song court's official system. The title 'Wenchang Zalu' derives from the 'Tongdian' ('通典'), which refers to the Shangshu Province (尚书省) as the "Celestial Storehouse of Wenchang" (文昌天府). The text is noted for its detailed records of institutional procedures and court customs, though it also includes diverse anecdotes. For instance, one passage on Confucian scholars discussing 'Yao' and 'Shun' in relation to "heavenly principles" is cross-referenced with accounts from Fan Zhen's 'Dongzhai Ji Shi' ('东斋記事'), Yue Ke's 'Tingshi' ('桯史'), and the 'Zhenxi Fangtan', illustrating discrepancies among sources. Another section misattributes a story about tigers to Ouyang Xiu, overlooking earlier references in records of Confucian officials like Kong Anguo as 'shi zhong' ('侍中').
The work contains errors, including misaligned chronological entries. For example, a passage on imperial rites and banquets at the Zichen Hall inadvertently splits into four distinct sections due to copyist mistakes, though these were originally continuous. Despite such flaws, the 'Wenchang Zalu' is praised for its value in correcting omissions in the 'Songshi', particularly regarding ceremonial protocols and official appointments.
The text was transmitted solely through manuscript copies until modern printings emerged. However, some passages—such as those on new administrative codes or butterfly classifications from Cui Bao's 'Gujin Zhu' (古今注) and 'Xijing Zaji' (西京杂记)—were incorrectly divided in printed versions. A preface by Song scholar Wei Chuan precedes the text, while Wang Shizhen lauded it as a "model of historical anecdotes" ('shuo bu zhi jia'). Originally classified under 'gu shi lei' (story/chronicle category) in the 'Songshi Yiwenzhi', its eclectic content—spanning official systems and miscellaneous commentary—led to reclassification into the 'zaja lai' (miscellaneous schools of thought).
The work's transmission history highlights tensions between manuscript accuracy and later editorial interventions, ensuring it remains a critical but nuanced resource for studying early Song administrative culture.
