Lǐ Chānglín (937–1008), courtesy name
Tiānxī, was from Chuzhou County, Songzhou (modern-day Caoxian, Shandong Province) during the early
Song Dynasty. During the reign of
Emperor Taizong, he served as
Vice Chancellor.
In the third year of the太平兴国 (Taiping Xingguo) era (978), Lǐ Chānglín passed the imperial examination and was appointed as a Junior Assessor at the Ministry of Justice and Vice Magistrate of Hezhou. He later served as Director of the Office of Works, Right Censor, and Vice Magistrate of Yinzhou. When the capital city opened the Jinming Pool, Lǐ Chānglín presented a hundred-verse poem, which earned him the praise of Emperor Taizong. As a result, he was promoted to the position of Right Remonstrator and became a Historian in the Imperial Academy. He was then reassigned as a Right Censor and Governor of Chuzhou. Later, he was appointed as the Transport Commissioner of Huainan (with its seat in present-day Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province), and subsequently transferred to the position of Junior Minister of Revenue and Governor of Guangzhou. However, he failed to maintain integrity in his official duties. In the second year of the Chunhua era (991), he was recalled to the capital due to accusations that he had accumulated excessive wealth. He served as Chief Justice of the Court of Review, acting Judge of the Ministry of Personnel, and then transferred to the position of Right Censor and Commissioner of Revenue. In the third year of the Chunhua era (982), he was appointed Chancellor of the Censors, where he impeached Zheng Wenbao, the Transport Commissioner of Shaanxi, for causing trouble on the border, building a city in the desert, and lightly changing the law. As a result, Zheng Wenbao was demoted to a post outside the capital.
In the second year of the Zhida era (996), Lǐ Chānglín was appointed as Vice Chancellor but did not achieve much. In the third year of the Zhida era (997), around the time of Emperor Taizong's death, he conspired with Hu Dan and the imperial attendant Wáng Jì'ēn to support Crown Prince Chuzhou as emperor. After Emperor Zhenzong ascended the throne, Lǐ Chānglín was demoted to the position of Military Secretary of Zhongwu Circuit. In the second year of the Xianping era (999), he returned to the capital and served as Deputy Director of the Palace Office, eventually retiring with the title of Secretary Supervisor. In the first year of the Dazhong Xiangfu era (1008), Lǐ Chānglïn died.
