312年，封渤海王，拜大將軍。316年，被靳准誣陷和皇太弟劉乂謀反作亂，和河間王劉易上表彈劾常侍王沈矯詔誣陷忠臣，結黨擅權，請罷官治罪，相國劉粲護衛王沈。因為劉聰朝政混亂，哭著勸諫不成反被劉聰斥責「早晚都哭，是不是想讓你爹我早死」，憂憤而亡。
