Zhang Ying was an old retainer of Emperor Xuangong of Ming (Zhu Zhanji) from his time as the Crown Prince. In March of the first year of the Xuande era (1426), Emperor Xuangong appointed Zhang Ying, who was then serving as Vice Minister of Rites in the Capital, to also serve as Grand Secretary of Huagai Hall and attend the Wenyuan Pavilion. In February of the second year of the Xuande era (1427), Zhang Ying was promoted to Minister of Rites while retaining his position as Grand Secretary of Huagai Hall. In October of the fourth year of the Xuande era (1529), Zhang Ying was reassigned to serve as Minister of Rites in Nanjing. He passed away in October of the first year of the Zhengtong era (1436) at the age of sixty-two.
