Biography
During the Southern Song Dynasty
Liu Tan was studious and skilled in writing, particularly knowledgeable about music. In his youth, he was renowned alongside his elder brother Liu Yue.
In the third year of Shengming (479), Xiao Ze served as the Grand General of the Central Army and appointed Liu Tan as a military advisor, later transferring him to be a secretary.
During the Southern Qi Dynasty
Wang Jian, a high-ranking official and also a poet and bibliographer, once praised Liu Yue and Liu Tan to others: "The two dragons of the Liu family can be said to advance a thousand miles in a day." When Wang Jian was appointed as Left Minister of Works, he visited Liu Shilong's house. Liu Shilong thought he was visiting him and waited for a long time. However, when Wang Jian arrived, he only asked about Liu Yue and Liu Tan, telling Liu Shilong: "Your talented sons are well-endowed; it is fitting to honor them today. If I visit again, it might not be with the same intention, as young people may misinterpret my visits."
Later, Xiao Ze became Emperor Wu of Qi. During a banquet at Fenghuo Tower, Emperor Wu praised Liu Tan's poetry and told his younger brother, Prince Yuzhang Xiao Yi, that Liu Tan not only had a clear and refreshing demeanor but also wrote with strength and grace.
Liu Tan later served as an official in the Three Ministries of the Board of Works and was gradually promoted to Prince Baidong Xiao Zixiang's advisor. When Xiao Zixiang became Governor of Jingzhou, Liu Tan accompanied him to his post. Xiao Zixiang grew close to petty people, and Liu Tan knew he would face trouble, so he feigned illness and returned to the capital. Later, when Xiao Zixiang rebelled and was killed, Liu Tan escaped unscathed.
Liu Tan served as a Deputy Secretary of the Secretariat and later as Chief Clerk of the Left Guard General's Office. He was promoted to Governor of Xinchang but was dismissed due to poor governance. After some time, he became a military advisor in the Right Army. In the late Jianwu era, he served as Western Rong Commandant and, in the first year of Yongyuan (499), was appointed as Governor of Liang and Southern Qin states while serving as Ningxu General. In the second year (500), when Prince Yuzhou Xiao Yan raised an army, in December, Liu Tan responded by raising troops in Hanzhong. In the third month of the first year (501) of Emperor Nan Kang Xiao Baorong's reign as regent, Xiao Yan repeatedly urged him to ascend the throne, and Liu Tan and Governor Jingling Cao Jingzong also advised him to do so. In February, Xiao Baorong issued a proclamation to the capital, praising Liu Tan for his role in the uprising. In March, after Xiao Baorong ascended the throne as Emperor He of Qi, he appointed Liu Tan, who was then serving as Conquering General, as Governor of Yi and Ning states, and later as Attendant-in-Ordinary and Commander of the Front Army.
During the Liang Dynasty
Xiao Yan ascended the throne as Emperor Wu of Liang and summoned Liu Tan to serve as Guard General, but before he could take office, he was promoted to太子詹事 (Director of the Crown Prince's Affairs) and given the additional title of散骑常侍 (Attendant Gentleman). Previously, when Xiao Yan served as Governor of Yuzhou, he had gifted a jade ring from Maotu to Liu Tan. During the New Year banquet in the second year of Tianjian (503), Emperor Wu asked Liu Tan if the jade ring he was wearing was the one given at Maotu. Liu Tan confirmed it was and said he had always worn it. Emperor Wu then offered him a toast, but Liu Tan did not finish his drink. Emperor Wu said, "I often compare you to Liu Yuanshi." After the banquet, Liu Tan was enfeoffed as Marquis of Qujiang County with a fief of one thousand households. Emperor Wu composed a poem for Liu Tan: "You are truly the best among your peers; I remember your contributions." He also once said, "Xu Yuanyu (former Governor of Guangzhou, who plotted to attack Guangzhou and was executed) disobeyed orders in Lingnan. According to Zhou dynasty laws, the crimes of fathers and brothers do not extend to their descendants. I have already released his sons; what do you think?" Liu Tan replied, "Punishment should not affect successors, and rewards should be extended to future generations. We see this in your wise reign." People at the time considered his words insightful. In the first month of the third year (504), he was promoted to Right Minister of Works.
In October of the fourth year of Tianjian (505), Emperor Wu launched a large-scale northern campaign, appointing his younger brother, General Linchuan Xiao Hong, as commander-in-chief and Liu Tan as deputy. The Liang army initially captured Liancheng in the fifth year (506) of May, but in July, Xiao Hong learned that Wei reinforcements were nearby and, fearing to advance, held a council to discuss withdrawal. Left Guard General Lu Shengzhen suggested retreating, which Xiao Hong agreed with, but Liu Tan disagreed: "Wherever our army goes, what city does not submit? What is difficult about this?" The other generals also opposed the retreat. In September, the Liang army suffered defeat, and Xiao Hong, Liu Tan, and Governor of Northern Xu Prefecture Chang Yizhi retreated to Liancheng. ;. 19. 24 in. 35: 4 the: 04- a0} 204. 22. 28: 22} 23: 24 for: 28 of 2 support. 213 the same. 42 the you to 2. the: 20, 2.0 in. the number to 2.
