The book is divided into three chapters.

Chapter 1

Chapter 1 discusses measurement units of length, weight and capacity, and the rules of counting rods. Although counting rods were in use in the Spring and Autumn period and there were many ancient books on mathematics such as Book on Numbers and Computation and The Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art, no detailed account of the rules was given. For the first time, The Mathematical Classic of Sun Zi provided a detail description of the rules of counting rods: "one must know the position of the counting rods, the units are vertical, the tens horizontal, the hundreds stand, the thousands prostrate", followed by the detailed layout and rules for manipulation of the counting rods in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with ample examples.

Chapter 2

Chapter 2 deals with operational rules for fractions with rod numerals: the reduction, addition, subtraction, and division of fractions, followed by mechanical algorithm for the extraction of square roots.

Chapter 3

Chapter 3 contains the earliest example of Chinese remainder theorem, a key tool to understanding and resolving Diophantine equations.

成書年代

孫子算經的確切成書年代不詳。學者根據書中事物出現的時間，估計孫子算經成書于南北朝。

• 卷下問33有「今有長安、洛陽相去九百里」之句；長安一詞首見于漢代，因此孫子算經成書不可能早于西元前3世紀。

• 有學者根據孫子算經卷下第5問：「今有棋局，方十九道。問用棋幾何？答曰三百六十一。」，認為19道361子的圍棋，最早出現在3世紀中葉，估計孫子算經成書于魏晉時代。

• 學者王玲根據孫子算經卷下「今有錦一匹，值錢一萬八千，問丈尺寸各值幾何？」，認為丈尺寸的換算率，在473年變更，而《孫子算經》用舊法，因此《孫子算經》成書不晚于473年（北魏延興三年，劉宋元徽元年）。

作者

• 卷下「今有佛書」一問，說明《孫子算經》的作者和《孫子兵法》的孫武是不同的人。

內容

全書共分三卷：

上卷

詳細的討論了度量衡的單位和籌算的制度和方法。籌算在春秋戰國時代已經運用，但在古代數學著作如算數書、九章算術等書中都不曾記載算籌的使用方法；孫子算經第一次詳細地記述籌算的布算規則，：「凡算之法，先識其位，一縱十橫，百立千殭，千十相望，百萬相當」，此外又說明用空位表示零。。

在進行乘法時，「凡乘之法：重置其位，上下相觀，頭位有十步，至十有百步，至百有千步，至千以上 命下所得之數列于中。言十即過，不滿，自如頭位。乘訖者，先去之下位；乘訖者，則俱 退之。六不積，五不隻。上下相乘，至盡則已。」。《孫子算經》明確說明「先識其位」的位值概念，和「逢十進一」的十進位制。

除法法則：「凡除之法：與乘正異乘得在中央，除得在上方，假令六為法，百為實，以六除百，當進之二等，令在正百下。以六除一，則法多而實少，不可除，故當退就十位，以法除實，言一六而折百為四十，故可除。若實多法少，自當百之，不當復退，故或步法十者，置于十百位（頭位有空絕者，法退二位。餘法皆如乘時，實有餘者，以法命之，以法為母， 實餘為子。」

中卷

主要是關于分數的應用題，包括面積、體積、等比數列等計算題，大致都在《九章》中論述的範圍之內；

下卷

對後世的影響最為深遠，如下卷第31題即著名的「雞兔同籠」問題，後傳至日本，被改為「鶴龜算」（據藤原松三郎之《日本數學史概要》）。

今有雉、兔同籠，上有三十五頭，下有九十四足。問：雉、兔各幾何？答曰：雉二十 三，兔一十二。

術曰：上置三十五頭，下置九十四足。半其足，得四十七，以少減多，再命之，上三 除下三，上五除下五，下有一除上一，下有二除上二，即得。又術曰：上置頭，下置足，半其足，以頭除足，以足除頭，即得。

下卷第26題「物不知數」為後來的「大衍求一術」的起源，被看作是中國數學史上最有創造性的成就之一，稱為中國餘數定理：

今有物，不知其數。三三數之，賸二；五五數之，賸三；七七數之，賸二。問：物幾 何？答曰：二十三。

術曰：三三數之，賸二，置一百四十；五五數之，賸三，置六十三；七七數之，賸二 ，置三十。並之，得二百三十三，以二百一十減之，即得。凡三三數之，賸一，則置七十；五五數之，賸一，則置二十一；七七數之，賸一，則置十五。一百六以上，以一百五 減之，即得。
