Sun Ying (2nd century - 3rd century), styled Zongru, was an official during the Cao Wei period of the Three Kingdoms. He was from Jiyang. In his youth, Sun Ying served Daoist Wang Heping and followed him to the capital during the Guanghe era. When Wang Heping fell ill and passed away, Sun Ying buried him in Dongtao. Wang Heping left behind over a hundred scrolls of books and several bags of medicine, all of which he gave to Sun Ying. Later, one of Wang Heping's disciples, Xia Rong, claimed that Wang Heping's body had disintegrated, causing Sun Ying to regret not taking the valuable books and elixirs. This incident was later mentioned in an essay written by Emperor Wen of Wei, Cao Pi.
Sun Ying once lost his wife. When he served as a Gentleman Attendant (侍郎), Cao Pi granted him the young and beautiful widow Fu Shi, who was a former concubine of Huan Jie. Sun Ying did not like Fu Shi but dared not disobey the imperial command. On the advice of his daughter-in-law, Sun Shi, he declined the offer by citing that Huan Jie and he were colleagues. Emperor Wen issued an edict commending him for this.
During the Huangchu era, Sun Ying served as the Governor of Bohai Commandery for over ten years.
In the sixth year of the Huangchu era (225 AD), in January, Cao Pi returned from his campaign against Wu and encamped in the Chenliu commandery. At that time, Sun Ying was serving as the Governor of Chenliu. He paid a visit to the Chief Secretary of the Imperial Secretariat, Bao Xun. As the camp had not yet been fully constructed, only markers were set up. Sun Ying did not follow the designated path, and the military camp clerk, Liu Yao, intended to impeach him. However, Bao Xun did not take action because the moat and rampart were incomplete. When the army returned to Luoyang, Liu Yao was punished, and Bao Xun petitioned for his dismissal. Liu Yao secretly reported that Bao Xun had acted out of personal favoritism towards Sun Ying, leading to Bao Xun's punishment and execution.
In the first year of the Jingchu era (237 AD), Attendant-in-Ordinary, Lu Yu, was appointed as the Minister of Personnel. Emperor Ming of Wei, Cao Rui, asked Lu Yu to choose his successor, saying, "Only someone like you will do." Lu Yu recommended the Regular Attendant Zheng Chong. When Cao Rui asked him to recommend someone he had not heard of, Lu Yu then recommended Ruan Wu and Sun Ying. As a result, Cao Rui appointed Sun Ying as an Attendant-in-Ordinary. Previously, Sun Shi had said that Lu Yu would never forget his father's recommendation, which turned out to be true.
In the second year of the Zhengshi era (241 AD), Sun Ying, along with Grand Coachman Tao Qiu Yi, Guard General of Yongning Commandery Meng Guan, and Secretary of the Secretariat Wang Ji, recommended Guan Ning.
Later, Sun Ying succeeded Lu Yu as Minister of Personnel. Soon after, he was promoted to Senior Attendant at the Palace and appointed as the Chief Astronomer, and he was enfeoffed as a Marquis within the Pass. Sun Ying worked alongside Senior Attendant and Chief Astronomer Zheng Chong, Regular Attendant and Commander of the Central Army, Lord of Anyang Pavilion Cao Xi, Attendant-in-Ordinary Xun Yi, and Minister of Works, Prince Consort of the Inner Marquisate He Yan to compile a collection of the best commentaries on the Analects, known as the Analects: Collected Explanations. This work was presented to the imperial court and has been passed down through generations.
When Sima Shi submitted a memorial to Empress Dowager Guo requesting the dethronement of Cao Fang, Sun Ying's name was among those who signed it.
Sun Ying was ultimately enfeoffed as the Marquis of Jiande Pavilion.
