Biography

King Gongyang was a seventh-generation descendant of Sinjong of Goryeo, and the son of Wang Gyun. He married the daughter of No Chaek, Sun-bi of the No clan. In 1389, Yi Seonggye's supporters forced King Chang from the throne and enthroned King Gongyang in his stead. This faction went on to oversee the events of King Gongyang's brief reign, including the assassinations of King Gongyang's predecessors, King U and King Chang.

After the murder of Jeong Mong-ju, the last major supporter of the Goryeo kings, King Gongyang was deposed and the Goryeo dynasty came to the end. He was at first exiled to Wonju, then went to Samcheok where he died.

生平

高麗忠穆王元年（1345年）二月五日生，封定昌君。父為定原府院君王鈞，母為國大妃王氏；他是王鈞的第二子。

明洪武二十一年（1388年）四月，高麗國王王禑、判三司事崔瑩命左軍都統使曹敏修、右軍都統使李成桂進攻明朝遼東。五月，曹敏修、李成桂在威化島回軍，回師松都，流放並處死崔瑩。六月，王禑被逼迫退位，其子王昌即位。

明洪武二十二年（1389年）十一月，高麗國王王昌被李成桂廢位，守門下侍中李成桂立定昌府院君王瑤為王，是為高麗恭讓王。以李成桂為奮忠定難匡複燮理佐命功臣，爵和寧君、開國忠義伯，食邑一千戶，食實封三百戶，田二百結、奴婢二十口。稱中興功臣，父母妻封爵，子孫蔭職。

1390年，高麗越過伊板嶺（摩天嶺）于海洋設吉州萬戶府。翌年七月，派李必等「齎榜文招諭東女真地面諸部落」。

明洪武二十五年（1392年）三月，門下侍中、都總中外諸軍事李成桂墜馬病篤。高麗恭讓王與守門下侍中鄭夢周策劃剪除李成桂。時李成桂第五子李芳遠丁憂在家，派判典客事趙英珪殺害鄭夢周。七月，高麗恭讓王被逼迫退位，李成桂則被擁立為王。八月，被封為恭讓君。恭讓王和兩位王子被遷往原州，後又遷至三陟。高麗宗室分別被囚禁在江華島、巨濟島。

明洪武二十七年（1394年）四月，朝鮮太祖李成桂遣中樞院副使鄭南晉、刑曹議郎咸傅霖前往三陟，絞死恭讓王及其子王奭。又分遣刑曹典書尹邦慶、大將軍吳蒙乙至江華島，刑曹典書孫興宗、僉節制沈孝生至巨濟島，將囚禁在兩處的高麗宗室全部誅滅。

明永樂十四年、朝鮮太宗十六年（1416年）八月，朝鮮太宗李芳遠追謚其為恭讓王。恭讓王與順妃盧氏在江原道三陟的合葬墓被升格為高陵（고릉）。
