漢光武帝建武十四年（38年）光武帝劉秀恢復了因為新朝篡漢和新朝滅亡後戰亂中斷的孔子嫡裔的爵位，封孔子十七代孫孔志為褒成侯，為列侯，食邑二千戶。主持孔子的祭祀。孔志死後，謚號元成，他生下三個兒子：孔損、孔澍、孔恢。漢明帝時由孔損襲爵褒成侯。
