439年，北涼國君沮渠牧犍派征南大將軍沮渠董來統兵一萬，出城南迎戰北魏大軍，涼軍崩潰。北魏前鋒將領劉絜聽信占卜預言，以日子不吉，沒有乘勝追擊而召回軍隊，沮渠董來才逃回姑臧城。太武帝拓跋燾因此對劉絜十分惱怒。
