王光泰，清實錄稱王光代，與哥哥王光恩、弟弟王昌早年參加明末農民起義，後來被明朝招安，固守鄖陽（今湖北鄖縣）。1645年，與明朝的鄖陽撫院徐起元一起投降了清朝。王光恩被任命為襄陽總兵。1647年四月，王光恩被誣陷逮捕押往北京。清廷想收編他們兄弟的隊伍。王光泰、王昌在四月二十九日率領部下兵將七八千人反清，占領鄖陽、襄陽地區。聯絡湖南的南明督師閣部何騰蛟，永曆朝廷封王光泰為「欽命提督鄖襄等處聯絡秦豫一帶義鎮、挂鎮武將軍印、鎮武伯」。
清湖廣提督孫定遼親自帶領馬兵567名，步兵3333名進剿，結果中伏，全軍覆沒，本人也被義軍擊斃。清廷命吏部侍郎喀喀木進攻鄖陽，王光泰寡不敵眾，退守夔東，成為「夔東十三家軍」之一。
