| When he entered the ancestral temple of the state, he asked about everything. |

| Tai Gong, to avoid Zhou, was dwelling on the coast of the eastern sea. When he heard of the rise of king Wen, he said, "Why should I not go and follow him?" |
| 《·》: | 《》曰：『毋越厥命以自覆也。』 |
| It is said in the Tai Jia (Shu, III, v, sect. 1, 5, 7), "Do not frustrate the charge to me, and bring on yourself your own overthrow." |
| 《》: | 或曰：「太上無法而治，法非所以為治也。」 |
| Someone said: In the primordial past there were no laws and institutions but yet there was order. Thus laws and institutions are not a means to order. |
| 《·》: | 太上無敗，其次敗而有以成，此之謂用民。 |
| The greatest men know of no defeat. The next greatest turn failure into success, and this, by the employment of the people. |

| Who said, 'This time I showed myself to him after the pattern of the grand harmony (of the two elemental forces), with the superiority inclining to neither.' |

| The historian remarks on this as follows: Most scholars say that the five emperors are deserving of honour. |

| 《·》: | 是故黃鐘生林鐘，林鐘生大呂，大呂生夷則，夷則生太簇，太簇生南呂，南呂生夾鐘，夾鐘生無射，無射生姑洗，姑洗生應鐘，應鐘生蕤賓。 |

| 《·》: | 佞幸之徒，閎、藉孺之輩，無德薄才，以色稱媚，不宜愛而受寵，不當親而得附，非道理之宜，故太史公為之作傳 |
