Ji Kang asked how to cause the people to reverence their ruler, to be faithful to him, and to go on to nerve themselves to virtue.
孟子·公孫丑下》:或問曰:「齊伐燕,有諸?」
Some one asked Mencius, saying, 'Is it really the case that you advised Qi to smite Yan?'
禮記·緇衣》:子曰:「政之不行也,教之不成也,爵祿不足也,刑罰不足恥也。」
The Master said, 'When (the measures of) government do not take effect, and the lessons of the ruler do not accomplish their object, (it is because) the giving of rank and emoluments is unfit to stimulate the people to good, and (the infliction of) punishments and penalties is unfit to make them ashamed (of evil).'
揚子法言》:諷則已,不已,吾恐不免於也。
