孟子·離婁上》:孟子曰:「離婁之明,公輸子之巧,不以規矩,不能成方員:師曠之聰,不以六,不能正五音。」
Mencius said, 'The power of vision of Li Lou, and skill of hand of Gong Shu, without the compass and square, could not form squares and circles. The acute ear of the music-master Kuang, without the pitch-tubes, could not determine correctly the five notes.'
禮記·王制》:命典禮考時月,定日,同,禮樂制度衣服正之。
He ordered the superintendent of rites to examine the seasons and months, and fix the days, and to make uniform the standard tubes, the various ceremonies, the (instruments of) music, all measures, and (the fashions of) clothes. (Whatever was wrong in these) was rectified.
揚子法言》:或問:「交五聲、十二也,或雅或鄭,何也?」
Someone asked: All music is based on the five tones and the twelve note scale, yet some music is ceremonial, and some is [like that of] Zheng and Wei. Why?
莊子·駢拇》:多於聰者,亂五聲,淫六,金石、絲竹,黃鐘、大呂之聲非乎?
An extraordinary power of hearing leads to a confusion of the five notes, and an excessive use of the six musical accords. (Its possessor), in bringing out the tones from the instruments of metal, stone, silk, and bamboo, aided by the Huang-zhong and Da-lu (tubes).
商君書·算地》:此先王之正也,故為國分田數小。
Was the correct rule of the former kings. In administering a state, therefore, and in dividing arable land.
