The Master said, "I will not be afflicted at men's not knowing me; I will be afflicted that I do not know men."
孟子·尽心上》:独孤臣孽子,其操心也危,其虑也深,故达。
They are the friendless minister and concubine's son, who keep their hearts under a sense of peril, and use deep precautions against calamity. On this account they become distinguished for their intelligence.

Favour and disgrace would seem equally to be feared; honour and great calamity, to be regarded as personal conditions (of the same kind).
商君书·农战》:凡治国者,民之散而不可搏也,是以圣人作壹,抟之也。
Generally speaking, in administrating a country, the trouble is when the people are scattered and when it is impossible to consolidate them. That is why a sage tries to bring about uniformity and consolidation.
