| The Master said, "When internal examination discovers nothing wrong, what is there to be anxious about, what is there to fear?" |
| 《·》: | 言前定则不跲，事前定则不困，行前定则不疚，道前定则不穷。 |
| If what is to be spoken be previously determined, there will be no stumbling. If affairs be previously determined, there will be no difficulty with them. If one's actions have been previously determined, there will be no sorrow in connection with them. If principles of conduct have been previously determined, the practice of them will be inexhaustible. |
| 《·》: | 今岁凶，民饥道饿，重其子此疚于队，其可无察邪？ |
| But famine and dearth is a much greater calamity than the dropping of a child. Should there not be also endeavour (to prevent it)? |
| 《·》: | 忧心孔疚、我行不来。 |
| Our sorrowing hearts are in great distress; But we shall not return from our expedition. |
| 《·》: | 刚中正，履帝位而不疚，光明也。 |
| (The fifth line is) strong, in the centre, and in its correct place. (Its subject) occupies the God-(given) position, and falls into no distress or failure; - (his) action will be brilliant. |
| 《·》: | 君子不耻，内省不疚，何忧于志，是已矣。 |
| 《·》: | 不为利回，不为义疚。 |
