《孟子·滕文公下》:得志與民由之，不得志獨行其道。
When he obtains his desire for office, to practise his principles for the good of the people; and when that desire is disappointed, to practise them alone.
《史記·禮書》:王公由之，所以一天下，臣諸侯也。
《荀子·議兵》:禮者、治辨之極也，強固之本也，威行之道也，功名之總也，王公由之所以得天下也，不由所以隕社稷也。
《韓詩外傳·卷四》:禮者、治辯之極也，強國之本也，威行之道也，功名之統也，王公由之，所以一天下也，不由之，所以隕社稷也。
