陈亢问于伯鱼曰：	Chen Kang asked Bo Yu, saying,
“子亦有异闻乎？”	"Have you heard any lessons from your father different from what we have all heard?"
对曰：	Bo Yu replied,
“未也。	"No.
尝独立，	He was standing alone once,
鲤趋而过庭。	when I passed below the hall with hasty steps,
曰：	and said to me,
‘学诗乎？’	'Have you learned the Odes?'
对曰：	On my replying
‘未也。’	'Not yet,'
不学诗，	he added, 'If you do not learn the Odes,
无以言。’	you will not be fit to converse with.'
鲤退而学诗。	I retired and studied the Odes.
他日又独立，	Another day, he was in the same way standing alone,
鲤趋而过庭。	when I passed by below the hall with hasty steps,
曰：	and said to me,
‘学礼乎？’	'Have you learned the rules of Propriety?'
对曰：	On my replying
‘未也。’	'Not yet,'
‘不学礼，	he added, 'If you do not learn the rules of Propriety,
无以立。’	your character cannot be established.'
鲤退而学礼。	I then retired, and learned the rules of Propriety.
闻斯二者。”	I have heard only these two things from him."
陈亢退而喜曰：	Chen Kang retired, and, quite delighted, said,
“问一得三，	"I asked one thing, and I have got three things.
闻诗，	I have heard about the Odes.
闻礼，	I have heard about the rules of Propriety.
又闻君子之远其子也。”	I have also heard that the superior man maintains a distant reserve towards his son."
