| 凡用兵之法， | In war, |
| 將受命於君， | the general receives his commands from the sovereign. |
| 合軍聚眾， | Having collected an army and concentrated his forces, |
| 交和而舍， | he must blend and harmonize the different elements thereof before pitching his camp. |
| 莫難於軍爭。 | After that, comes tactical maneuvering, than which there is nothing more difficult. |
| 軍爭之難者， | The difficulty of tactical maneuvering |
| 以迂為直， | consists in turning the devious into the direct, |
| 以患為利。 | and misfortune into gain. |
