三军、五兵之运，	The direction of the three hosts and their men with the five weapons
德之末也；	is but a trifling quality;
赏罚利害，	rewards and penalties with their advantages and sufferings,
五刑之辟，	and the inflictions of the five punishments
教之末也；	are but trivial elements of instruction;
礼法度数，	ceremonies, laws, measures, and numbers,
形名比详，	with all the minutiae of jurisprudence,
治之末也；	are small matters in government;
钟鼓之音，	the notes of bells and drums,
羽毛之容，	and the display of plumes and flags
乐之末也；	are the slightest things in music,
哭泣衰绖，隆杀之服，	and the various grades of the mourning garments
哀之末也。	are the most unimportant manifestations of grief.
此五末者，须精神之运，心术之动，然后从之者也。	These five unimportant adjuncts required the operation of the excited spirit and the employment of the arts of the mind, to bring them into use.
末学者，古人有之，而非所以先也。	The men of old had them indeed, but they did not give them the first place.
