世學道之人，	The ordinary students of Dao
無少君之壽，	have not Li Shao Jun's age.
年未至百，	Before Reaching a hundred years
與眾俱死，	they die like all the others.
愚夫無知之人，	Yet uncultured and ignorant people
尚謂之尸解而去，	still hold that they are separated from their bodies, and vanish,
其實不死。	and that, as a matter of fact, they do not die.
所謂「尸解」者，何等也？	What is understood by separation from the body?
謂身死精神去乎？	Does it mean that the body dies, and the spirit disappears?
謂身不死得免去皮膚也？	Or that the body does not die, but drops its coil?
如謂身死精神去乎？	If one says that the body dies, and the spirit is lost,
是與死無異，	there is no difference from death,
人亦仙人也。	and every one is a genius.
如謂不死免去皮膚乎？	And if one believes that the body does not die, but throws off its coil,
諸學道死者，骨肉具在，	one must admit that the bones and the flesh of all the deceased Daoists are intact
與恆死之尸無以異也。	and in no wise different from the corpses of ordinary mortals.
夫蟬之去復育，	When the cricket leaves its chrysalis,
龜之解甲，	the tortoise drops its shell,
虵之脫皮，	the snake its skin,
鹿之墮角，	and the stag its horns,
殼皮之物解殼皮，	in short, when the horned and skinned animals lose their outward cover,
持骨肉去，	retaining only their flesh and bones,
可謂尸解矣。	one might speak of the separation from the body.
今學道而死者，	But even if the body of a dead Daoist
尸與復育相似，	were similar to a chrysalis,
尚未可謂尸解。	one could not use this expression.
何則？	Why?
案蟬之去復育，	When the cricket leaves the chrysalis,
無以神於復育，	it cannot be considered as a spirit with regard to the chrysalis.
況不相似復育，謂之尸解，	Now to call it a separation from the body, when there is not even a similarity with the chrysalis,
蓋復虛妄失其實矣。	would again be an unfounded assertion missing the truth.
