声音之道，	There is an interaction between the words and airs (of the people)
与政通矣。	and the character of their government.
宫为君，	(The note) gong represents the ruler;
商为臣，	shang, the ministers;
角为民，	jiao, the people;
徵为事，	zhi, affairs;
羽为物。	and yu, things.
五者不乱，	If there be no disorder or irregularity in these five notes,
则无怗懘之音矣。	there will be no want of harmony in the state.
宫乱则荒，	If gong be irregular, (the air) is wild and broken;
其君骄。	the ruler of the state is haughty.
商乱则陂，其官坏。	If shang be irregular, (the air) is jerky; the offices of the state are decayed.
角乱则忧，其民怨。	If jiao be irregular, (the air) expresses anxiety; the people are dissatisfied.
徵乱则哀，其事勤。	If zhi be irregular, (the air) expresses sorrow; affairs are strained.
羽乱则危，	If yu be irregular, (the air) is expressive of impending ruin;
其财匮。	the resources (of the state) are exhausted.
五者皆乱，	If the five notes are all irregular,
迭相陵，	and injuriously interfere with one another,
谓之慢。	they indicate a state of insolent disorder;
如此，则国之灭亡无日矣。	and the state where this is the case will at no distant day meet with extinction and ruin.
