天子七日而殡，七月而葬。	The son of Heaven was encoffined on the seventh day (after his death), and interred in the seventh month.
诸侯五日而殡，五月而葬。	The prince of a state was encoffined on the fifth day, and interred in the fifth month.
大夫、士、庶人，三日而殡，三月而葬。	A Great officer, (other) officers, and the common people were encoffined on the third day, and interred in the third month.
三年之丧，	The mourning rites of three years (for parents)
自天子达，	extended from the son of Heaven to all.
庶人县封，	The common people let the coffin down into the grave by ropes,
葬不为雨止，	and did not suspend the interment because of rain.
不封不树，	They raised no mound, nor planted trees over the grave.
丧不贰事，	That no other business should interfere with the rites of mourning
自天子达于庶人。	was a thing extending from the son of Heaven to the common people.
丧从死者，	In the mourning rites they followed (the rank of) the dead;
祭从生者。	in sacrificing to them, that of the living.
支子不祭。	A son by a concubine did not (preside at) the sacrifices.
