論語·顏淵》:子曰:「浸潤之譖,受之愬,不行焉。」
The Master said, "He with whom neither slander that gradually soaks into the mind, nor statements that startle like a wound in the flesh, are successful."
孟子·告子下》:故天將降大任於是人也,必先苦其心志,勞其筋骨,餓其體,空乏其身,行拂亂其所為,所以動心忍性,曾益其所不能。
Thus, when Heaven is about to confer a great office on any man, it first exercises his mind with suffering, and his sinews and bones with toil. It exposes his body to hunger, and subjects him to extreme poverty. It confounds his undertakings. By all these methods it stimulates his mind, hardens his nature, and supplies his incompetencies.
禮記·深衣》:短毋見,長毋被土。
It was not made so short as to show any of the skin, nor so long as to touch the ground.
孝經·開宗明義》:身體髮,受之父母,不敢毀傷,孝之始也。
Our bodies - to every hair and bit of skin - are received by us from our parents, and we must not presume to injure or wound them. This is the beginning of filial piety.
揚子法言》:張騫、蘇武之奉使也,執節沒身,不屈王命,雖古之使,其猶劣諸。
Zhang Qian and Su Wu were admirable envoys. They maintained their integrity, were unconcerned with death and never abandoned their ruler's commands. Even the praiseworthy envoys of the ancients were inferior to them.
墨子·修身》:暢之四支,接之肌,華髮隳顛1,而猶弗舍者,其唯聖人乎!
When one pursues such a way until it pervades his four limbs and permeates his flesh and skin, and until he becomes white-haired and bald-headed without ceasing, one is truly a sage.
莊子·逍遙遊》:曰:「藐姑射之山,有神人居焉,肌若冰雪,淖約若處子,不食五穀,吸風飲露。」
And the other replied, (He said) that 'Far away on the hill of Gu Ye there dwelt a Spirit-like man whose flesh and skin were (smooth) as ice and (white) as snow; that his manner was elegant and delicate as that of a virgin; that he did not eat any of the five grains, but inhaled the wind and drank the dew.'
商君書·算地》:其上世之士,衣不煖,食不滿腸,苦其志意,勞其四肢,傷其五臟,而益裕廣耳,非性之常,而為之者,名也。
Above these are the scholars of the world; their clothes do not warm their skins, their food does not fill their stomachs, they travail their thoughts, fatigue their four limbs and suffer in their five internal organs, and yet they go on increasing their activity. This is not prompted by the eternal principles of human nature, but for the sake of fame.
詩經·碩人》:如凝脂。
Her skin was like congealed ointment.
尚書·盤庚上》:今汝聒聒,起信險,予弗知乃所訟。
Now, (however), you keep clamouring, and get the confidence (of the people) by alarming and shallow speeches; I do not know what you are wrangling about.
