孟子·梁惠王下》:人不得,則其上矣。
And if people generally are not able to enjoy themselves, they condemn their superiors.
商君書·算地》:事處上,則民遠而其上。
Scholars who are out of office are held in esteem, so that people become estranged and criticize their superiors.
荀子·非相》:人有三必窮:為上則不能愛下,為下則好其上,是人之一必窮也。
韓詩外傳·卷四》:有不由命,然後俟之以刑,刑一人而天下服,下不其上,知罪在己也。
