古之学者：The ancients in prosecuting their learning
比物丑类。 compared different' things and traced the analogies between them.
鼓无当于五声， The drum has no special relation to any of the musical notes;
五声弗得不和。 but without it they cannot be harmonised.
水无当于五色， Water has no particular relation to any of the five colours;
五色弗得不章。 but without it they cannot be displayed.
学无当于五官。 Learning has no particular relation to any of the five senses;
五官弗得不治。 but without it they cannot be regulated.
师无当于五服， A teacher has no special relation to the five degrees of mourning;
五服弗得不亲。 but without his help they cannot be worn as they ought to be.
