儒家 -> 礼记 -> 乐记 -> 10

乐者为同，Similarity and union are the aim of music;
礼者为异。difference and distinction, that of ceremony.
同则相亲， From union comes mutual affection;
异则相敬，from difference, mutual respect.
乐胜则流，Where music prevails, we find a weak coalescence;
礼胜则离。where ceremony prevails, a tendency to separation.
合情饰貌者礼乐之事也。 It is the business of the two to blend people's feelings and give elegance to their outward manifestations.
礼义立， Through the perception of right produced by ceremony,
则贵贱等矣； came the degrees of the noble and the mean;
乐文同， through the union of culture arising from music,
则上下和矣； harmony between high and low.
好恶著，则贤不肖别矣。By the exhibition of what was to be liked and what was to be disliked, a distinction was made between the worthy and unworthy.
刑禁暴， When violence was prevented by punishments,
爵举贤， and the worthy were raised to rank,
则政均矣。 the operation of government was made impartial.
仁以爱之， Then came benevolence in the love (of the people),
义以正之， and righteousness in the correction (of their errors);
如此，则民治行矣。 and in this way good government held its course.
