子云：The Master said,
“小人贫斯约，'The small man, when poor, feels the pinch of his straitened circumstances;
富斯骄；and when rich, is liable to become proud.
约斯盗， Under the pinch of that poverty he may proceed to steal;
骄斯乱。”and when proud, he may proceed to deeds of disorder.
礼者，The rules of propriety
因人之情而为之节文，recognise these feelings of men, and lay down definite regulations for them,
以为民坊者也。 to serve as dykes for the people.
故圣人之制富贵也使民富不足以骄，Hence the sages dealt with riches and honours, so that riches should not have power to make men proud;
贫不至于约， that poverty should not induce that feeling of being pinched;
贵不慊于上， and that men in positions of honour should not be intractable to those above them.
故乱益亡。 In this way the causes of disorder would more and more disappear.'
