子云：The Master said,
“七日戒， 'There are the seven days of fasting,
三日齐， and the three days of vigil and adjustment of the thoughts;
承一人焉以为尸， there is the appointment of the one man to act as the personator of the dead,
过之者趋走， in passing whom it is required to adopt a hurried pace
以教敬也。”- all to teach reverence (for the departed).'
醴酒在室， The sweet liquor is in the apartment (where the personator is);
醍酒在堂， the reddish in the hall;
澄酒在下， and the clear in the court below
示民不淫也。- all to teach the people not to go to excess in being greedy.
尸饮三， The personator drinks three cups,
众宾饮一， and all the guests drink one
示民有上下也。- teaching the people that there must be the distinction of high and low.
因其酒肉，The ruler takes the opportunity of the spirits and flesh of his sacrifice
聚其宗族， to assemble all the members of his kindred
以教民睦也。- teaching the people to cultivate harmony.
故堂上观乎室， Thus it is that on the hall above they look at what is done in the apartment,
堂下观乎上。 and in the court below at what is done by those in the hall (for their pattern);
《诗》云：as it is said in the Book of Poetry (II. vi, ode 5, 3),
“礼仪卒度， 'Every form is according to rule;
笑语卒获。” Every smile and word is as it should be.'
