《詩》云：「邦畿千里，惟民所止。」In the Book of Poetry, it is said, "The royal domain of a thousand li is where the people rest."
《詩》云：「緡蠻黃鳥，止于丘隅。」In the Book of Poetry, it is said, "The twittering yellow bird rests on a corner of the mound."
子曰： The Master said,
「於止， "When it rests,
知其所止， it knows where to rest.
可以人而不如鳥乎？」 Is it possible that a man should not be equal to this bird?"
《詩》云：In the Book of Poetry, it is said,
「穆穆文王， "Profound was King Wen.
於緝熙敬止！」 With how bright and unceasing a feeling of reverence did he regard his resting places!"
為人君， As a sovereign,
止於仁； he rested in benevolence.
為人臣， As a minister,
止於敬； he rested in reverence.
為人子， As a son,
止於孝； he rested in filial piety.
為人父， As a father,
止於慈； he rested in kindness.
與國人交， In communication with his subjects,
止於信。 he rested in good faith.
