子张学干禄。Zi Zhang was learning with a view to official emolument.
子曰：The Master said,
“多闻阙疑，"Hear much and put aside the points of which you stand in doubt,
慎言其馀，while you speak cautiously at the same time of the others
则寡尤；- then you will afford few occasions for blame.
多见阙殆，See much and put aside the things which seem perilous,
慎行其馀，while you are cautious at the same time in carrying the others into practice
则寡悔。- then you will have few occasions for repentance.
言寡尤，When one gives few occasions for blame in his words,
行寡悔，and few occasions for repentance in his conduct,
禄在其中矣。”he is in the way to get emolument."
