言偃复问曰：Yan Yan again asked,
“如此乎礼之急也？” 'Are the rules of Propriety indeed of such urgent importance?'
孔子曰： Confucius said,
“夫礼，'It was by those rules
先王以承天之道， that the ancient kings sought to represent the ways of Heaven,
以治人之情。 and to regulate the feelings of men.
故失之者死， Therefore he who neglects or violates them may be (spoken of) as dead,
得之者生。and he who observes them, as alive.
《诗》曰： It is said in the Book of Poetry,
‘相鼠有体， "Look at a rat-how small its limbs and fine!
人而无礼； Then mark the course that scorns the proper line.
人而无礼， Propriety's neglect may well provoke;
胡不遄死？’ A wish the man would quickly court death's stroke."
是故夫礼，Therefore those rules
必本于天， are rooted in heaven,
淆于地， have their correspondencies in earth,
列于鬼神， and are applicable to spiritual beings.
达于丧祭、射御、冠昏、朝聘。They extend to funeral rites, sacrifices, archery, chariot-driving, capping, marriage, audiences, and friendly missions.
故圣人以礼示之， Thus the sages made known these rules,
故天下国家可得而正也。”and it became possible for the kingdom, with its states and clans, to reach its correct condition.'
