禮有以文為貴者：In others, ornament formed the mark.
天子龍袞， The son of Heaven wore his upper robe with the dragons figured on it;
諸侯黼，princes, the lower robe with the axes' embroidered on it;
大夫黻，Great officers, their lower robe with the symbol of distinction;
士玄衣纁裳；and other officers, the dark-coloured upper robe, and the lower one red.
天子之冕，The cap of the son of Heaven
朱綠藻十有二旒， had 12 pendents of jade beads set on strings hanging-down of red and green silk;
諸侯九，that of princes, 9;
上大夫七，that of Great officers of the highest grade, 7;
下大夫五，and if they were of the lowest grade, 5;
士三。 and that of other officers, 3
此以文為貴也。 - in these cases the ornament was the mark of distinction.
