儒家 -> 礼记 -> 仲尼燕居 -> 3.1

子贡退，Zi-gong having retired,
言游进曰：Yan You advanced, and said,
“敢问礼也者，'May I be allowed to ask whether the rules of ceremony
领恶而全好者与？”do not serve to control what is bad, and to complete what is good?'
子曰：“然。”The Master said, 'They do.'
然则何如？”Very well, and how do they do it?'
子曰： The Master said,
“郊社之义，'The idea in the border sacrifices to Heaven and Earth
所以仁鬼神也； is that they should give expression to the loving feeling towards the spirits;
尝禘之礼，the ceremonies of the autumnal and summer services in the ancestral temple
所以仁昭穆也； give expression to the loving feeling towards all in the circle of the kindred;
馈奠之礼，the ceremony of putting down food (by the deceased)
所以仁死丧也； serves to express the loving feeling towards those who are dead and for whom they are mourning;
射乡之礼，the ceremonies of the archery fetes and the drinking at them
所以仁乡党也； express the loving feeling towards all in the district and neighbourhood;
食飨之礼，the ceremonies of festal entertainments
所以仁宾客也。” express the loving feeling towards visitors and guests.'
