诸侯之宫县，For the princes to suspend (their drums and bells) in four rows like the walls of an apartment (after the fashion of the king),
而祭以白牡， and to use a white bull in sacrificing;
击玉磬， to strike the sonorous jade;
朱干设锡，to use the red shields with their metal fronts
冕而舞《大武》， and the cap with descending tassels in dancing the Da-Wu;
乘大路， and to ride in the grand chariot
诸侯之僭礼也。- these were usages which they usurped.
台门而旅树， The towered gateway with the screen across the path,
反坫， and the stand to receive the emptied cups;
绣黼，the axes embroidered
丹朱中衣， on the inner garment with its vermilion colour
大夫之僭礼也。- these were usurpations of the Great officers.
故天子微，Thus, when the son of Heaven was small and weak,
诸侯僭； the princes pushed their usurpations;
大夫强， and when the Great officers were strong,
诸侯胁。 the princes were oppressed by them,
于此相贵以等， In this state (those officers) gave honour to one another as if they had been of (high) degree;
相觌以货， had interviews with one another and made offerings;
相赂以利， and bribed one another for their individual benefit:
而天下之礼乱矣。 and thus all usages of ceremony were thrown into disorder.
诸侯不敢祖天子， It was not lawful for the princes to sacrifice to the king to whom they traced their ancestry,
大夫不敢祖诸侯。 nor for the Great officers to do so to the rulers from whom they sprang.
而公庙之设于私家， The practice of having a temple to such rulers in their private families,
非礼也， was contrary to propriety.
由三桓始也。 It originated with the three Huan.
