(Representations of the mystery)
有物混成，There was something undefined and complete,
先天地生。 coming into existence before Heaven and Earth.
寂兮寥兮， How still it was and formless,
独立不改，standing alone, and undergoing no change,
周行而不殆， reaching everywhere and in no danger (of being exhausted)!
可以为天下母。 It may be regarded as the Mother of all things.
吾不知其名，I do not know its name,
字之曰道， and I give it the designation of the Dao (the Way or Course).
强为之名曰大。 Making an effort (further) to give it a name I call it The Great.
大曰逝，Great, it passes on (in constant flow).
逝曰远，Passing on, it becomes remote.
远曰反。Having become remote, it returns.
故道大， Therefore the Dao is great;
天大， Heaven is great;
地大， Earth is great;
王亦大。 and the (sage) king is also great.
域中有四大， In the universe there are four that are great,
而王居其一焉。 and the (sage) king is one of them.
人法地，Man takes his law from the Earth;
地法天， the Earth takes its law from Heaven;
天法道， Heaven takes its law from the Dao.
道法自然。 The law of the Dao is its being what it is.
