(Increase of evidence)
使我介然有知，If I were suddenly to become known,
行於大道， and (put into a position to) conduct (a government) according to the Great Dao,
唯施是畏。 what I should be most afraid of would be a boastful display.
大道甚夷，The great Dao (or way) is very level and easy;
而民好徑。 but people love the by-ways.
朝甚除，Their court(-yards and buildings) shall be well kept,
田甚蕪， but their fields shall be ill-cultivated,
倉甚虛； and their granaries very empty.
服文綵， They shall wear elegant and ornamented robes,
帶利劍， carry a sharp sword at their girdle,
厭飲食， pamper themselves in eating and drinking,
財貨有餘； and have a superabundance of property and wealth;
是謂盜夸。 - such (princes) may be called robbers and boasters.
非道也哉！This is contrary to the Dao surely!
