乐正子入见，The officer Yue Zheng entered the court, and had an audience.
曰： He said,
“君奚为不见孟轲也？”'Prince, why have you not gone to see Meng Ke?'
曰： the duke said,
“或告寡人曰， 'One told me that,
‘孟子之后丧逾前丧’，on the occasion of the scholar Meng's second mourning, his observances exceeded those of the former.
是以不往见也。” It is on that account that I have not gone to see him.'
曰：“何哉君所谓逾者？'How is this!' answered Yue Zheng. 'By what you call "exceeding," you mean, I suppose,
前以士，that, on the first occasion, he used the rites appropriate to a scholar,
后以大夫；and, on the second, those appropriate to a great officer;
前以三鼎， that he first used three tripods,
而后以五鼎与？” and afterwards five tripods.'
曰： The duke said,
“否。 'No;
谓棺椁衣衾之美也。”I refer to the greater excellence of the coffin, the shell, the grave-clothes, and the shroud.'
曰： Yo-chAng said,
“非所谓逾也， 'That cannot be called "exceeding."
贫富不同也。” That was the difference between being poor and being rich.'
