Mencius answered,
“告子曰：'Gao says,
‘不得于言，"What is not attained in words
勿求于心； is not to be sought for in the mind;
不得于心， what produces dissatisfaction in the mind,
勿求于气。’ is not to be helped by passion-effort."
不得于心，This last, when there is unrest in the mind,
勿求于气， not to seek for relief from passion-effort,
可； may be conceded.
不得于言，勿求于心，But not to seek in the mind for what is not attained in words
不可。 cannot be conceded.
夫志，气之帅也； The will is the leader of the passion-nature.
气，体之充也。 The passion-nature pervades and animates the body.
夫志至焉， The will is first and chief,
气次焉。 and the passion-nature is subordinate to it.
故曰：‘持其志，无暴其气。’Therefore I say, Maintain firm the will, and do no violence to the passion-nature.
