「昔者禹抑洪水而天下平，'In former times, Yu repressed the vast waters of the inundation, and the country was reduced to order.
周公兼夷狄驅猛獸而百姓寧，Zhou Gong's achievements extended even to the barbarous tribes of the east and north, and he drove away all ferocious animals, and the people enjoyed repose.
孔子成《春秋》而亂臣賊子懼。Confucius completed the "Spring and Autumn," and rebellious ministers and villainous sons were struck with terror.
《詩》云： It is said in the Book of Poetry,
『戎狄是膺， "He smote the barbarians of the west and the north;
荊舒是懲， He punished Jing and Shu;
則莫我敢承。』 And no one dared to resist us."
無父無君，These father-deniers and king-deniers
是周公所膺也。 would have been smitten by Zhou Gong.
我亦欲正人心， I also wish to rectify men's hearts,
息邪說， and to put an end to those perverse doctrines,
距詖行，to oppose their one-sided actions
放淫辭， and banish away their licentious expressions
以承三聖者；- and thus to carry on the work of the three sages.
豈好辯哉？ Do I do so because I am fond of disputing?
予不得已也。I am compelled to do it.
能言距楊墨者，Whoever is able to oppose Yang and Mo
聖人之徒也。」 is a disciple of the sages.'
