曰：Mencius answered,
“长息问于公明高曰：'Chang Xi asked Gong Ming Gao, saying,
‘舜往于田， "As to Shun's going into the fields,
则吾既得闻命矣； I have received your instructions,
号泣于旻天，于父母，则吾不知也。’ but I do not know about his weeping and crying out to the pitying heavens and to his parents."
公明高曰： Gong Ming Gao answered him,
‘是非尔所知也。’ "You do not understand that matter."
夫公明高以孝子之心，Now, Gong Ming Gao supposed that the heart of the filial son
为不若是恝， could not be so free of sorrow.
我竭力耕田，Shun would say, "I exert my strength to cultivate the fields,
共为子职而已矣， but I am thereby only discharging my office as a son.
父母之不我爱，于我何哉？ What can there be in me that my parents do not love me?"
帝使其子九男二女，The Di caused his own children, nine sons and two daughters,
百官牛羊仓廪备，the various officers, oxen and sheep, storehouses and granaries, all to be prepared,
以事舜于畎亩之中。 to serve Shun amid the channelled fields.
天下之士多就之者， Of the scholars of the kingdom there were multitudes who flocked to him.
帝将胥天下而迁之焉。The sovereign designed that Shun should superintend the kingdom along with him, and then to transfer it to him entirely.
为不顺于父母， But because his parents were not in accord with him,
如穷人无所归。 he felt like a poor man who has nowhere to turn to.
天下之士悦之， To be delighted in by all the scholars of the kingdom,
人之所欲也， is what men desire,
而不足以解忧； but it was not sufficient to remove the sorrow of Shun.
好色，The possession of beauty
人之所欲， is what men desire,
妻帝之二女， and Shun had for his wives the two daughters of the Di,
而不足以解忧； but this was not sufficient to remove his sorrow.
富，人之所欲， Riches are what men desire,
富有天下， and the kingdom was the rich property of Shun,
而不足以解忧； but this was not sufficient to remove his sorrow.
贵，人之所欲， Honours are what men desire,
贵为天子， and Shun had the dignity of being sovereign,
而不足以解忧。 but this was not sufficient to remove his sorrow.
人悦之、好色、富贵，无足以解忧者，The reason why the being the object of men's delight, with the possession of beauty, riches, and honours were not sufficient to remove his sorrow,
惟顺于父母，可以解忧。 was that it could be removed only by his getting his parents to be in accord with him.
人少，则慕父母； The desire of the child is towards his father and mother.
知好色， When he becomes conscious of the attractions of beauty,
则慕少艾； his desire is towards young and beautiful women.
有妻子， When he comes to have a wife and children,
则慕妻子； his desire is towards them.
仕则慕君，When he obtains office, his desire is towards his sovereign
不得于君则热中。- if he cannot get the regard of his sovereign, he burns within.
大孝终身慕父母。But the man of great filial piety, to the end of his life, has his desire towards his parents.
五十而慕者，予于大舜见之矣。” In the great Shun I see the case of one whose desire at fifty year's was towards them.'
