子路問：Zi Lu asked
「聞斯行諸？」whether he should immediately carry into practice what he heard.
子曰：The Master said,
「有父兄在，"There are your father and elder brothers to be consulted
如之何其聞斯行之？」- why should you act on that principle of immediately carrying into practice what you hear?"
冉有問：Ran You asked the same,
「聞斯行諸？」whether he should immediately carry into practice what he heard,
子曰：and the Master answered,
「聞斯行之。」"Immediately carry into practice what you hear."
公西華曰：Gong Xi Hua said,
「由也問聞斯行諸，"You asked whether he should carry immediately into practice what he heard,
子曰and you said,
『有父兄在』；'There are your father and elder brothers to be consulted.'
求也問聞斯行諸，Qiu asked whether he should immediately carry into practice what he heard,
子曰and you said,
『聞斯行之』。'Carry it immediately into practice.'
赤也惑，I, Chi, am perplexed,
敢問。」and venture to ask you for an explanation."
子曰：The Master said,
「求也退，"Qiu is retiring and slow;
故進之；therefore I urged him forward.
由也兼人，You has more than his own share of energy;
故退之。」therefore I kept him back."
