儒家 -> 論語 -> 子路 -> 20

子貢問曰：Zi Gong asked, saying,
「何如斯可謂之士矣？」"What qualities must a man possess to entitle him to be called an officer?
子曰：The Master said,
「行己有恥，"He who in his conduct of himself maintains a sense of shame,
使於四方，and when sent to any quarter
不辱君命，will not disgrace his prince's commission,
可謂士矣。」deserves to be called an officer."
曰：Zi Gong pursued,
「敢問其次。」"I venture to ask who may be placed in the next lower rank?"
曰：And he was told,
「宗族稱孝焉，"He whom the circle of his relatives pronounce to be filial,
鄉黨稱弟焉。」whom his fellow villagers and neighbors pronounce to be fraternal."
曰：Again the disciple asked,
「敢問其次。」"I venture to ask about the class still next in order."
曰：The Master said,
「言必信，"They are determined to be sincere in what they say,
行必果，and to carry out what they do.
硜硜然小人哉！They are obstinate little men.
抑亦可以為次矣。」Yet perhaps they may make the next class."
曰：Zi Gong finally inquired,
「今之從政者何如？」"Of what sort are those of the present day, who engage in government?"
子曰：The Master said
「噫！"Pooh!
斗筲之人，they are so many pecks and hampers,
何足算也。」not worth being taken into account."
