於乎小子、Oh! my son,
未知藏否。When you did not know what was good, and what was not good,
匪手攜之、Not [only] did I lead you on by the hand,
言示之事。But I showed the difference by appealing to affairs.
匪面命之、Not [only] did I charge you face to face,
言提其耳。But I held you by the ears.
借曰未知、And still perhaps you do not know,
亦既抱子。Although you have held a son in your arms.
民之靡盈、If people are not self-sufficient,
誰夙知而莫成。Who comes [only] to a late maturity after early instruction?
