閟宫有侐、How pure and still are the solemn temples,
实实枚枚。In their strong solidity and minute completeness!
赫赫姜嫄、Highly distinguished was Jiang Yuan,
其德不回。Of virtue undeflected.
上帝是依、God regarded her with favour;
无灾无害。And without injury or hurt,
弥月不迟、Immediately, when her months were fulfilled,
是生后稷、She gave birth to Hou-ji.
降之百福。On him were conferred all blessings, -
黍稷重穋、[To know] how the millet ripened early, and the sacrificial millet late,
稙稺菽麦。How first to sow pulse, and then wheat.
奄有下国、Anon he was invested with an inferior State,
俾民稼穑、And taught the people how to sow and to reap,
有稷有黍、The millet and the sacrificial millet,
有稻有秬。Rice and the black millet;
奄有下土、Ere long all over the whole country; -
缵禹之绪。[Thus] continuing the work of Yu.
